How to get rid of gnats

The question of how to get rid of gnats will likely never subside. It’s unfortunate that gnats will always be commonplace within the house. While gnats are normally no more than a simple nuisance, this nuisance can become a major headache when the population of insects grows to an unmanageable number. Fortunately, there are some tips available to help you get rid of your gnat problem quickly and efficiently.

What is a gnat?

Gnats are tiny little insects that typically roam around trash and leftover food. They look similar to little flies and are around 4 mm in length. Male gnats typically swarm in packs and will do everything they can to make your life miserable!

Gnats generally have a life span of approximately 2 to 4 months. While their lives aren’t long, they are quite good at reproducing at a quick rate. If you find that you have a gnat infestation in your house, do everything you can to get rid of it as fast as possible. If you don’t, they will multiply at an alarming rate.

How to get rid of gnats naturally

The best thing that you can do to get rid of gnats is to eliminate their food source from your home. If you have fruits or vegetables lying around, it is likely that gnats will find them. Instead of leaving this food out in the open, make sure that you secure it in either a cabinet or a refrigerator. Also, remove trash from your home as frequently as possible. If this can’t be done in a timely manner, look to seal off the trashcan with a properly sized top. An interesting trick to limiting the reproduction of gnats is to coat the inside of your sink with some type of oil (opt for the cheapest oil you can find). When the gnats enter your sink, they will cover themselves in the oil and find that they can no longer reproduce. While this will not kill the gnats that touch the oil, it will keep them from reproducing and causing an even larger gnat problem in the future. Preventing gnats from entering your house is also a key. Make sure to keep all doors closed at all times, it also close off any holes that you find from the outside to the inside.

Ok, this is how I get rid of gnats once and for all — put rotten food at the bottom of my trashcan. Within a day, the gnats will all be swarming that. At that time (since the trashcan is a closed container), I spray with disinfectant (like your reader above said) and they all die. Those that don’t die are severely injured and die off within a day or two. This works wonders for me! Thanks for the reference. Hope other people leave their tips to getting rid of gnats!

Greg, nice suggestion. I had a gnat problem a while ago and had no idea how to get rid of gnats! I Tried killing them with an electronic bug zapper, but that didn’t get them all. Just simply cleaning up my kitchen did the trick, but your idea is quite smart and worth checking out!

Good post. I know this sounds sick, but I have a major gnat problem in my bathroom. How can I get rid of gnats in a location that doesn’t have noticable food / trash?
